Horses have a strong, innate oral fixation which is the root of many vices and bad behaviors such as biting, wood chewing and cribbing, Cribbing stems from cehwing and mouthing hard surfaces, often learned through mimicking other cribbers.
The act itself is a manner in which the horse can entertain itself when it doesn’t have access to proper stimulus such as turnout, exercise or social interaction. It also is perevelant in more anxious, hot-blooded breeds as a more obsessive-compulsive disorder as opposed to simply being a vice. The horse becomes dependent on the act, addicted to the way cribbing alleviates bordeom and its release of low level endorphins.
Obvously, it’s not a healthy habit and it is best to nip it in the bud but in some cases, even with straps, shock collars and reprehension, the horse honestly can not help itself from cribbing.
Side note:
I’m not saying CRIBBING is natural, I’m saying it stems from the horse’s natural oral fixation. the questions is not about cribbing, but what behavior it has stemmed off of….
